Fiddler on the Roof
An International School’s Musical Collaboration
by Danielle Tate-Stratton
Support three of Tokyo’s best-known international schools as students from Saint Mary’s International School, Seisen International School, and the International School of the Sacred Heart, combine forces to form the cast of popular musical Fiddler on the Roof.
First performed on Broadway in 1964, Fiddler tells the story of dairyman Tevye, an old-fashioned father who, just like the other fathers in his small village, tries to raise his daughters to understand and uphold the traditional Jewish values that have been passed down through his family for generations. As Tevye tries to find suitable husbands for his daughters, he must confront a world that is changing rapidly as the Tsarist Russia of 1905 is poised on the brink of upheaval. Over the course of the musical, Tevye must come to understand that the young people in his world are starting to follow their hearts over the minds of their elders.
Audiences are sure to enjoy the unforgettable hits of Fiddler on the Roof, which include If I Were a Rich Man, Tradition, and Matchmaker. The performances will be taking place Apr. 19 at 7pm and Apr. 20 at 3pm at the St. Mary’s International School auditorium, which is located at their campus just a ten-minute walk from the Kaminoge or Futakotamagawa stations. Tickets are ¥1,000–¥1,500 and available by phone at 03-3709-3411 or fax: 03-3707-1950. Please note: there is no parking available due to construction.
