Dr. Su Hua Newton Presents an Evening of Fine Wines
by Sheree Hsu
I was ecstatic to attend a Newton Wine Event with Dr. Su Hua Newton as the guest speaker. Recognized for her fine wines and for using only indigenous yeasts, Dr. Su Hua is also well-known for never filtering her wines—a process recognised to keep the purity and antioxidants that are good for one’s health, intact. The event, at Roti Midtown featured five wines from her vineyard and a four-dish tasting course provided by Roti.
Dr. Newton started the evening with a brief introduction of herself and her wines. Along with the health benefits, she emphasized the importance of unfiltering in keeping the natural flavors of the grapes present in the wine. Dr. Newton was a wonderfully avid speaker with energy and enthusiasm. She shared her stories and experiences of traveling throughout Asia and meeting many distinguished people. Throughout the night she made the rounds of each table and personally chatted with each party present.
Following the first glass of wine for the evening (a glass of Newton’s Green Point Vintage Brut 2005) the first appetizer, a serving of Pacific Oysters, was paired with the Newton Unfiltered Chardonnay 2005. The flavors of both balanced each other perfectly and the chardonnay was wonderfully light, featuring hints of pear, citrus and oak. The second appetizer was a crab cake and foie gras plate paired with the Newton Unfiltered Merlot 2002. Both the foie gras and the merlot were excellent with a subtle but medium bodied flavoring.
The main entrée featured a lamb chop with chargrilled vegetables and mint jelly paired with a Newton Unfiltered Cabernet Sauvignon 2002. Again, the food and wine was a perfect match creating a wonderful palette of flavors. The wine was rich and dark, full bodied, and yet didn’t overwhelm the main course. The dessert was a bread pudding served with Newton The Puzzle 2002, making it a fantastic ending to a wonderfully delicious meal.
Newton Vineyards feature three distinct categories of wines; Icon, which is a Spring Mountain Bordeaux blend; The Puzzle, featuring influences by Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot wines; and Red Label, a fruit blend featuring Chardonnays and Claret wines.
You can find Newton Wines at specialty wine shops or for your next dinner party order from Diageo Moet Hennessy at www.mhdkk.com. I would most certainly welcome the opportunity to hear Dr. Newton speak again and of course to sample her wonderful array of wines. Keep a look out for another appearance in Tokyo next year.
