People in Grass Houses...
By Owen Schaefer
A tea-house tree-house and a building covered in living dandelions—these are some of the most famous images from architect Terunobu Fujimori.
Fujimori's passions largely lie in the history of architecture, and the works that we see here, while in no way purporting to be historical reconstructions, are designed to recall the simplest of buildings. They bring to mind thatched cottages, and cliff-side cave dwellings. In an age of materials which allow architects to realize nearly any possible surface quality, Fujimori designs buildings that one can see the cracks in, buildings that feel built and yet still push the limits of their materials. The open spaces feel more human and organic.
Fujimori's works created a stir at the Venice Biennale, where he took charge of the Japanese pavilion. Recreated for Tokyo's Opera City Gallery will be his Theatre Dome—a dome-shaped structure of rope and bamboo—along with Fujimori's city model entitled “Tokyo Plan 2107,” a plan for the rebuilding of Tokyo after the current city has been sunk beneath the ocean due to melting polar ice caps. New works will also be on display.
Architecture of Terunobu Fujimori and ROJO (to Jul. 1) Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery. Hatsudai Station. ¥1,000. 11am- 7pm (to 8pm on Fri. and Sat., Closed Monday). Tel. 03-5353-0756. www.operacity.jp
